M12 creates artworks, research projects, and educational initiatives centered on context and place. They have received numerous awards and grants, including support from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Colorado Creative Industries, National Endowment for the Arts, Gates Family Foundation, Indianapolis Community Foundation, and the Minneapolis Foundation, among others. Recent exhibitions and commissioned projects have appeared at High Visibility: On Location in Rural America and Indian Country(Fargo, ND); 21st International Art Biennial of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia; 13th International Venice Architecture Biennale; Kalmar Konstmuseum (Sweden); Irish Museum of Modern Art (Dublin); Sala Diaz (San Antonio, TX); Santa Fe Art Institute; Des Moines Public Art Foundation; Corcoran School of the Arts and Design (Washington, D.C.); Center for Contemporary Arts Santa Fe; IASKA Australian Biennial; Biennial of the Americas (Denver, CO); John Michael Kohler Arts Center (Sheboygan, WI); The Contemporary (Baltimore, MD); and the Center for Land Use Interpretation.

M12 currently includes: Richard Saxton (founder/creative director), Margo Handwerker (curator/editor), Matthew Fluharty (curator/editor), Trent Segura (design/online operations), Marc McCay (merchandise/archives), George Perez (research/project support), Mary Welcome (research/project support), and Christopher Sauter (research/project support).
