Simmons School Cleanup

In partnership with River Blues Community Development Organization and Fleur de Lis Development Corporation:

Join us as we roll up our sleeves to clean up and protect the historic Simmons School, a cornerstone of St. Louis Avenue and African American education in The Ville since 1873. Together, our hands-on work honors this landmark’s legacy and helps clear the path for its vibrant future.

The cleanup takes place alongside artist Timmy Simonds’s Harriet Beecher Stowe Teachers College (STC) at Simmons Elementary (Miss Othmar), which explores the school’s history as the first Black teachers college west of the Mississippi River, operating from 1890 to 1954.

Abraham Diaz, Community Engagement Manager, will welcome participants on site.

What to bring: Wear closed-toe shoes or boots and appropriate clothing. Gloves and N95 masks will be provided. Some heavy lifting may be required. All participants must complete a waiver on site.

Water and light snacks provided.
