About the Program

Start the day with artist Malcolm Peacock and participate in Trap Run, a 5k organized with partners 4theVille. Following the run is a block party that includes activities by People’s Art and Recreation Center and a walking tour with artists and curators through The Ville.

This run is a prelude to Peacock’s To breathe or die, a choreographed, long-distance run that will be performed by a group of Black runners across St. Louis this October. To breathe or die links sites connected to the 1917 East St. Louis riots and inspired by the artist’s ongoing research into the 1928 and 1929 historic Bunion Derby, a nearly 3,400-mile transcontinental footrace, which included Black runners who faced targeted racial violence in the Jim Crow panhandle, including in St. Louis.

About the Artist

Malcolm Peacock is an American multidisciplinary artist. Working across performance, sculpture, and time-based media, his practice explores the emotional and psychic spaces of Black folks by considering the intricacies of intimacy and intentional presence. Through a methodology he describes as “slow choreo,” Peacock proposes a synchronized deceleration of mind and body in order to decouple the value of life from labor productivity while heightening sensory awareness of one’s surroundings. By prioritizing the “untouchable” yet deeply felt remnants of human connection, his work fosters the development of the self in relation to others within both natural and built environments. Peacock has exhibited at the Whitney Biennial (Whitney Museum of American Art, New York), MoMA PS1 (Queens), Carnegie Museum of Art (Pittsburgh), Artists Space (New York), and Baltimore Museum of Art.

The Northside Trap Run is St. Louis’ hip-hop themed 5K walk/run & festival that empowers North St. Louis neighborhoods and unifies grassroots, civic, educational, commercial and residential efforts to bridge the city’s north-south divide.
