About the Performance

The Host is an intimate contemporary dance performance conceived in collaboration with Saint Louis Dance Theatre Artistic Director Kirven Douthit-Boyd, dancers Kennan Fletcher and Monica Zesch, and artists Won Ju Lim and Amy Granat.

The performance directly responds to Won Ju Lim’s artwork, Parasiting, an installation that brings together architecture, sculpture, light, shadow and sound. Parasiting unfolds in a darkened room navigable by flashlight where laser-engraved glass panels cast shadows of web patterns and audience movement triggers motion-sensored “ghost sounds.”  For The Host, two dancers move through Lim’s illuminated glass installation while Granat films the encounter. This powerful interdisciplinary work merges visual art, choreography, and film.

The performance lasts ten minutes composed of 5 minutes of movement  and 5 minutes of reflection. The audience is invited to use a flashlight in the darkened room both to navigate the space and as participants in the performance.
