Opening: “Carolina Caycedo: Growing Deep Roots” at the Kemper Art Museum

Over the last 2 years, artist Carolina Caycedo worked with botanists, plant taxonomists, Native elders, scientists at the Missouri Botanical Garden and The Land Institute to learn about perennial prairie and water-absorbing plants that grow along waterways throughout the Mississippi River watershed. This research has informed a solo exhibition at the Kemper Art Museum and a monumental sculpture at the National Building Arts Center as part of the Counterpublic 2026: Coyote Time.

Organized by Nancy and Kenneth Kranzberg Curator and senior curator Meredith Malone, the exhibition brings together sculpture, drawings, prints and videos that address the interrelated issues of water and land stewardship and just energy transition. Caycedo created the large, three-part relief print “Prairie Root Portrait” at WashU’s Island Press this past spring.

Carolina Caycedo is a Colombian artist born in London and living in Los Angeles. Her murals, books, performances, films, photo-collages, hanging sculptures and installations are gateways into larger discussions about ways of being on Earth that foster sustaining and caring relationships with the natural and built environments.
