Prior to Counterpublic being formed as a triennial, The Luminary organized what was intended to be a one-off exhibition entitled Counterpublic along Cherokee Street in South St. Louis. Curated by The Luminary's co-directors James McAnally and Brea Youngblood, the exhibition opened simultaneously at The Luminary and at five locations throughout the Cherokee Street neighborhood of St. Louis featuring work from Alberto Aguilar, Damon Davis, EDELO, Lucky Pierre, Dread Scott, Sean Starowitz, and Work/Play.
