About the Exhibition
Ximena Garrido-Lecca is an artist who lives and works between Mexico City and Lima, working across sculpture and installation. Signal Interludes traces how trade, migration, and labor are tangled together in the industrial history of St. Louis. Taking the form of a copper rope-and-pulley system, the work focuses on rope’s extractive history and its role in shaping globalization. Garrido-Lecca examines the city’s history as an industrial and distribution hub at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers, drawing attention to the forces that have long moved goods, bodies, and information locally and regionally. The pulley system is a metaphor for the push and pull of opposing forces found in urban planning, political systems, and physical and informational infrastructure.
The installation also includes an electronic circuit that switches between connection and interruption. An LED panel collects this data over time, producing an evolving record of flows and ruptures in communication, revealing how the extractive underpinnings of systems designed to help connection also create disconnection.
