Reflected Memory on Traced Ground

Occupy Vacancy is a public art initiative co-founded by St. Louis artists Brianna McIntyre and André Fuqua. For the past five years, Occupy Vacancy has used a series of vacant lots on Enright Avenue to honor the heritage of lost homes and historical context throughout St. Louis. Reflected Memory on Traced Ground is a community gathering space within a landscaped lot that reflects the architectural history of the neighborhood. A sculptural memorial set within the landscape is composed of a freestanding door on a stone platform. Behind the door is a mirror, suggesting visitors reflect on the histories of missing buildings. Interconnected flower beds surround the sculpture, modeled after the layout of the missing residential building. The building was originally constructed to address housing scarcity following a destructive tornado one hundred years ago.
