About the Artwork
Presented in partnership with the Toronto Biennial of Art, Notebook of Return, conceived by Jean-Marc Bullet and Céline Semaan, is part of a series of edible food gardens along the Great Loop, a system of waterways connecting Canada with the United States. Cultivated by the Antioch Baptist Church Community Garden, the plants include okra, holy basil, rosemary, and spinach. The plant selections come from Bullet and Semaan’s research into West African and Palestinian seeds. The food grown here will be distributed by the Antioch Baptist Church Community Garden through its weekly food pantry and its residential educational initiatives. These include a teaching garden for Sumner High School, located next to the church.
The project is organized by Allison Glenn, curator of the 2026 Toronto Biennial of Art. It builds on her infrastructural engagement in North St. Louis as part of Counterpublic 2023.
