About the Artwork
Sandra Brewster is a Toronto-based artist who works across photography, installation, sculpture, and moving images. Brewster’s artwork visually expresses the diasporic experiences of Black and Caribbean communities. A Place to Put Your Things is a functional swing, open as a space for play and to calm the spirit. The outline of the swing forms two figures leaning into a kiss. Brewster’s design invites the viewer to sit inside the embrace. While swinging, visitors are comforted by the swaying motion, which echoes the calming movement often first experienced as babies in the embrace of a caregiver. A Place to Put Your Things offers a new opportunity to experience that comfort and is a tribute to Black love and joy.
You are invited to use the swing. Please be respectful of the sculpture and others.
