MEAL: Samay-Baji, Food of the Deities
Also known as the “food of the deities,” samay-baji is an auspicious assortment of foods traditionally enjoyed by the Newa community of Nepal during festivals, religious ceremonies, and celebrations. It is believed to bring prosperity, good health, good fortune, and happiness.
A traditional samay-baji set brings together a variety of flavors, textures, and preparations. Samay-baji holds particular significance during Yenya, or Indra Jatra, one of Kathmandu Valley’s most important festivals. During the celebration, large offerings of samay-baji are prepared for the gods and displayed in mounds outside temples and in neighborhood squares. The food is later shared with the community as an offering from the gods.
MENU:
Baji (beaten rice)
Chhoyla (spiced grilled meat)
Musya (roasted black soybeans)
Palu-lava (ginger and garlic)
Wo (black lentil pancake)
Sanya (smoked fish)
Bodi wala (black-eyed beans prepared with spices)
Fermented rice
