About the Artwork
The act of removing the Turner Middle School signs reveals the original lettering “Stowe Teachers College” in concrete on the tympanum and in metal on the monuments panel. The covering signs are left to the side of the portico and flipped to the back of the panel.
This building was built in 1938 as a community initiated PWA project specifically to house Stowe Teachers College. In 1954 when the school moved across town to be merged with a white teachers college, it was absorbed by the name of that school, Harris Teachers College. This building then became Turner Middle School, which was later closed.
