Details:

Simiya Sudduth is a mother, artist, and educator currently living and practicing in St. Louis. Within Sudduth’s practice, they explore the concepts of healing, spirituality, social justice, visibility, the landscape, joy, and beauty. Sudduth’s creative practice serves as a vessel to examine their own mental and emotional healing and spiritual journey while serving as a provocation for collective healing, inquiry, and expansion. For Sudduth, the acts of creating, viewing, embodying, and experiencing art are modes of healing within themselves. In their work, the notion of healing manifests in a multitude of forms.

For Counterpublic 2023, Sudduth’s projects act as a culmination, a connected reflection of all the ideas and working methods they have been exploring and experimenting with since 2020. These will span a number of murals and a mobile healing studio, Tha Muthaship, based out of Rung for Women, a nonprofit that promotes economic and social empowerment for women in St. Louis.

Tha Muthaship is a mobile healing and arts space nestled inside a repurposed 1970s Terry Travel Trailer bringing visual art, mindfulness, healing, and wellness modalities to communities in St. Louis. Sudduth feels that their practice holds power when they, as a self-identified, Black, queer femme, artist, and mother, takes up and commands public space as a social practice artist. In Sudduth’s words, “I aim to use that power to promote visibility and hold space for healing, joy, and justice.”

Tha Muthaship: Sound Healing/Meditation (30 minute sound healing, 15 minute meditations, 15 minutes for questions.) Located at 2717 Sidney St, Sound Healing and Meditation will occur at Tha Muthaship on April 29 and May 13 from 6 - 7PM.

Please note that this is an outdoor event. Bring blankets, cushions, or chairs, and anything else you will need to be comfortable for the experience.
