Process

Each three-year exhibition cycle focuses on a new set of dynamic ideas and questions that remain responsive to the moment and align with the most impactful opportunities in the St. Louis region. The cyclical process of selecting exhibition curators, locations, focus topics, key initiatives and partners is guided by intentional engagement. Ongoing community conversations and evolving partnerships serve as the foundation for exhibition-making, guiding Counterpublic in building a future rooted in collaboration, resilience, and transformation.

Circular Timeline

The three-year cycle begins with conversations and research that guides the selection of exhibition locations and curators. In the second year we publish community findings and select exhibition themes, artists, and partners. The live exhibition is the culmination of the third year and celebrates St. Louis as an epicenter of arts and culture.

2026 Exhibition Priorities

Our vision for the 2026 exhibition is to reflect the interests and imaginations of St. Louisans and amplify ideas for the St. Louis we hope to see. Over the course of 2024 we engaged over 1,400 individuals and collected 775 pieces of written feedback at events across the city. Feedback centered joy, the importance of intergenerational learning, and hope in creative collaboration.  Learn more in our Community Report (to be published February 2025). Focus areas include:
