The Griot Museum of Black History

Description:

The third translation of an ongoing series of earthen sculptures, and David Adjaye’s first permanent public sculpture, Asaase III is conceived as a contribution to the cultural infrastructure of the city of St. Louis and The Griot Museum of Black History borne from Adjaye’s ongoing reflections on the origins of Black architecture. With roots in Indigenous civilizations around the world, Assase III takes inspiration from earth-based architecture of West Africa while each of the six fragments is comprised of rammed earth sourced locally. As both a social and terrestrial sculpture, Asaase III orchestrates a series of outdoor rooms for both informal and formal programming.
