David Adjaye
In light of recent allegations against David Adjaye: Counterpublic stands against all forms of abuse, and supports survivors, especially Black women who are survivors. We became aware of the allegations through public reporting, and take these claims seriously. In view of these allegations, he planned opening of Asaase III has shifted to become a block party in support of The Griot Museum of Black History to lift up their continued work.

The third translation of an ongoing series of earthen sculptures, and Adjaye’s first permanent public sculpture, Asaase III is conceived as a contribution to the cultural infrastructure of the city of St. Louis and The Griot Museum of Black History borne from Adjaye’s ongoing reflections on the origins of Black architecture. With roots in Indigenous civilizations around the world, Assase III takes inspiration from earth-based architecture of West Africa while each of the six fragments is comprised of rammed earth sourced locally. As both a social and terrestrial sculpture, Asaase III orchestrates a series of outdoor rooms for both informal and formal programming.
Asaase III was commissioned by Counterpublic and donated to The Griot Museum of Black History.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
David Adjaye is an award-winning Ghanaian-British architect known to infuse his artistic sensibilities and ethos into community-driven projects. Notable projects include the Abrahamic Family House, an interfaith complex in Abu Dhabi, UAE, which opened to the public in March of 2023, and the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, which opened on the National Mall in Washington, DC in 2016.
